2023 Ford Bronco vs Jeep Wrangler

September 21st, 2023 by

The Ford Bronco and the Jeep Wrangler are two of the most iconic SUVs on the road. Both vehicles offer exciting features and a rugged style. The Wrangler has been a legend on the trails for many years, but the redesigned Bronco is excellently catching up and surpassing the Wrangler on the trails. Let’s compare the two models and see why the 2023 Ford Bronco is a true competitor.

2023 ford bronco vs jeep wranglerExterior Styling

A comparison between the Ford Bronco and the Jeep Wrangler should start with the exterior. These are two of the most unique SUVs you can find, specifically designed for off-road driving. Both have a removable roof and doors, but the Bronco has class-exclusive cowl-mounted mirrors. This means you’ll still have the side mirrors when you take off the doors. The Wrangler’s mirrors come off with the doors, limiting your view behind the vehicle.

Every 2023 Ford Bronco comes with either a hard or soft top, tow hooks, and LED headlights. The Big Bend adds LED fog lights, an upgraded front grille, and tinted second-row windows. It also has 17-inch alloy wheels and 32-inch all-terrain tires. If you step up to the Black Diamond, you’ll get black-painted steel wheels, rock rails, and skid plates.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler Sport starts its lineup with fog lights, tow hooks, skid plates, and 17-inch steel wheels. The Rubicon is the most trail-worthy model. It has rock rails, 17-inch wheels with all-terrain tires, and electronic locking front and rear differentials for extra traction when you go off-roading.

Interior and Technology

The interiors of the Ford Bronco and the Jeep Wrangler are filled with materials designed to withstand harsh elements. They both offer models with seating for four or five people and have comfortable front seats. Both come standard with cloth upholstery and offer extras, including heated front seats, upgraded upholstery, and a heated steering wheel.

Since you’ll need gear when you head off on adventures in the Bronco or Wrangler, cargo space is essential. Behind the second row of the two-door Bronco, you’ll find 22.4 cubic feet of space, while the Wrangler has 12.9 cubic feet. Folding the rear seats down expands the Bronco’s cargo area to 52.3 cubic feet and the Wrangler’s to 31.7 cubic feet. The four-door Bronco has 35.6 cubic feet behind the second row, and the Wrangler’s four-door model has 31.7 cubic feet of space.

The Ford Bronco’s interior has features that will keep you comfortable all year round. The base trim has single-zone manual air conditioning, power windows, and manually adjustable seats.

The technology in the new Ford Bronco starts with an 8-inch touch screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The display in the Jeep Wrangler starts with a 7-inch touch screen with an available upgrade to 8.4 inches. It also works with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Bumping up to the Bronco Outer Banks with the High Package gets you an infotainment system with a 12-inch touch screen and Ford’s Information on Demand panel, which is included in the SYNC 4 system. A 10-speaker B&O stereo system and wireless charging and Smart Charging USB ports are available.

Towing Capacity

Power in the Ford Bronco comes from a 2.3-liter turbo four-cylinder engine that generates 275 horsepower. A 2.7-liter twin-turbo V-6 engine is available and will get you 315 horsepower. The 2.3-liter engine can tow up to 3,500 pounds, and the 2.7-liter EcoBoost engine can also tow up to 3,500 pounds. With its 3.0-liter EcoBoost engine and 418 horsepower, the Raptor can tow up to 4,500 pounds.

The Jeep Wrangler’s engine lineup starts with a 3.6-liter V-6 engine and 285 horsepower. This engine can tow up to 3,500 pounds. There’s also a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine for the Wrangler. It generates 270 horsepower and can tow up to 3,500 pounds. If you choose the 6.4-liter HEMI V-8 engine for your Wrangler, it generates 470 horsepower and can tow up to 3,500 pounds.

Safety Ratings and Features

The Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler both offer advanced driver assistance technology. The Bronco has the advantage here because the Ford Co-Pilot360 group of driver aids is standard. This means that even at the base level, your Bronco will come with forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic high-beam headlights, and automatic emergency braking. It also has a hill-start assist, a rearview monitor, and hill-descent control.

The Jeep Wrangler has a rearview monitor, but if you want the advanced driver aids, you’ll need to bump up to the high-end Rubicon 392 or add them as an option. The Rubicon 392 has rear parking sensors, a blind-spot warning system with rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control. It also comes with forward collision warning and automatic braking.

The Bronco earned higher scores than the Wrangler in many safety tests. It scored well in all six of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) crash tests. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave it four stars in front crash protection and received three out of five stars in rollover protection.

The Wrangler received four stars for frontal crash protection and three stars for rollover protection. These are the same scores as the Bronco, but the Wrangler received a Marginal rating in the small overlap front crash test from the IIHS. It also received Poor and Marginal ratings for its headlights.
