2023 Ford EV Tow Specs & Capacities

Ford EV Trailer Towing Information | Available in Dallas, TX

Ford has made great strides to make its mark on the electric vehicle (EV) landscape, & it does so without sacrificing power.

While towing capacity might not always be top of your mind when buying a car, it comes in handy as you expand your range of toys.

The towing capacity of a sedan might be better suited to small trailers, but those trucks and SUVs make your vacations great, especially when you’re adding a boat or RV to the mix.

The team at Planet Ford Dallas has compiled this summary of the towing capacity of Ford EVs to help you decide which one best meets your towing needs.

Important Things To Consider When Towing With an Electric Vehicle

Ford EV Towing Capacity

Investing in an EV offers you the opportunity to do your part for the environment and have a more sustainable approach to the daily commute. But that shouldn’t mean that you’re limited to low-weight hauls. While the range of an EV might not be as far as that of a gas engine, it’s still powerful enough to do a decent haul.

That said, it’s worth knowing that towing with an EV might differ from towing with a gas car in the following ways:

• Lower towing capacity: The maximum towing capacity on EVs is significantly lower than on cars with gas engines. The power output of electric engines is smaller, thus reducing the weight these cars can comfortably manage.
• Reduced range: Unless you’re running a hybrid engine, you’re relying solely on the battery capacity of your EV to get you to your destination. If you’re increasing the weight of the car, it’ll require a larger output, which drains the battery faster.
• Increased cost: Towing drains the battery faster, which means more recharges along the way. The increase in cost should still be significantly cheaper than gas.

2023 Ford Escape ST-Line Elite Hybrid & Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid | Tow Specs & Capacities

When it comes to SUVs, you want a healthy mix of fuel economy and power. The Escape ST-Line Elite Hybrid has a towing capacity of 1,500 lbs, which is enough to still cart around some of your favorite toys.

The following should be a good fit for a 1,500lbs towing capacity:

• An ATV
• A Motorcycle
• One Snowmobile or Stand-Up Jet Ski
• Teardrop or A-Frame Campers

The Escape Plug-In Hybrid also offers 1,500 lbs towing capacity and features a decent cargo area with power lift gate, which makes packing and unpacking on trips that much simpler.

2023 Ford F-150 & F-150 Lightning | Tow Specs & Capacities

The Ford F-150 has always been considered a workhorse and is a favorite among families and workers alike. The range now offers a 3.5-liter PowerBoost Full Hybrid V-6 engine that can offer a towing capacity of up to 11,000 lbs. However, if you pair this up with the Max Trailer Tow package, you can bump this up to between 12,400 lbs and 12,700 lbs.

With this kind of towing power, you can tow anything from big items, such as camper vans to large trailers with multiple items, such as motorcycle trailers that can accommodate four or more cycles. This is also the starting range if you’re looking at towing your own tiny home on wheels if it fits within this weight class.

Ford also offers the F-150 Lightning range with a max towing capacity of 10,000 lbs. If you’re worried about power during those larger hauls, rest easy as this Lightning range features dual electric motors, one over each axle, to provide the maximum support.

2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E | Tow Specs & Capacities

You’re in for a treat with this SUV as the Mach-E promises to deliver power and economy at the same time. Although Ford hasn’t officially released the specs, it’s understood that the 91kWh battery can support a towing capacity of up to 1,100lbs.

1,100lbs might not seem like much, but it allows you to tow:

Some Small Trailers
• Light Travel Trailers
• Light, Small Boats, such as Aluminum Fishing Boats.
• Light, Pop-Up Campers

You can load light items, such as bicycles, a scrambler, and a kayak, on small trailers, but be sure to check the weight of motorcycles and Jet Skis first.

Ford offers four trims in this range, so it might increase the towing capacity with different engine options and battery capacity.

2023 Ford E-Transit | Tow Specs & Capacities

An electric vehicle in the van space is hard to come by, especially if you still need to keep that cargo space intact. The 2023 Ford E-Transit doesn’t compromise on cargo space and instead has the battery pack fitted underneath.

The E-Transit features zero tailpipe emissions and has three different builds to accommodate various cargo types, with low roof, medium roof, and high roof options. There’s no doubt that it’s made for work, but what about those big projects that need more gear on the worksite? The towing capacity is a comfortable 4,400lbs plus a payload capacity of up to 3,880lbs.

2023 Ford Explorer Limited | Tow Specs & Capacities

The 2023 Ford Explorer Limited is a roomy SUV that accommodates large families, plenty of luggage, and a trailer for that epic camping trip. It features a powerful 3.3-liter hybrid engine that can tow a maximum of up to 5,000 lbs.

This is the ideal model for water toys, such as boats, canoes, and water skis. It’s also a good option for larger trailers, such as upright U-Hauls.
